The Nightwatchman, which appears quarterly, has been going for some seven years now – that’s 30 issues, some 600 stories, and about 1.5 million words. And over that period we have covered pretty much every aspect of the game that you can think of.
When we started out back in 2013, it was always our ambition to make the Nightwatchman as global as possible. We wanted contributors from all the Test– playing nations and beyond. And we are proud to say that by and large we have achieved that ambition. Writers from England, Australia, West Indies, South Africa, New Zealand, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Zimbabwe, Bangladesh (and even from Ireland and Afghanistan, who weren’t even Test-playing nations when we started out) have all had their say. And entertained and informed us in equal measure.
In this special issue we have collected together our selection of the best pieces this special edition comprises a collection of beautifully written essays – originally published in the first 30 editions of the Nightwatchman, that touch, however tangentially, on Australia and all things Australian. Many are by Australian writers, many are not, but take as their inspiration Australian cricket or cricketers.
We have pieces from Geoff Lemon and Adam Collins, who together run the Final Word Podcast from Wisden Almanack editor Lawrence Booth, former Almanack editor Matthew Engel, Guardian sportswriter Jonathan Liew,and from Christian Ryan, whose bookon Kim Hughes recently won Wisden Cricket Monthly’s best ever cricketbook award.
And that’s just for starters. Aussie greats Don Bradman and Betty Wilson figure prominently, Bill Ponsford’s granddaughter Megan pens a thought provoking piece, and we even include an original song from the incomparable Neil Hannon. There really is something for everyone.
